Steel, as the conventional reinforcement material, has been widely used in the world. Until the 1960s, disadvantages of steel reinforcement showed up.  Steel, as a metal material, can be easily corroded. Structures in coastal areas and colder climates can be more easily corroded because of road salts and marine salts. Once steel bars being corroded, the concrete would not provide enough strength as before. Cracks would happen and cause the concrete to fracture. Engineers came up with many solutions until the Marshall-Vega Corporation developed a FRP reinforcing bar that didn’t ordinarily cause corrosion problems and worked well. FRP came into people’s view after that, lots of studies about FRP properties and applications have been done.

FRP is short for Fiber reinforced polymer, which also called fiber reinforced plastic. It has continuous fibers embedded in a resin matrix. Besides corrosion resistance, FRP also has high specific strength and modulus, durability, chemical and environmental resistance and electromagnetic permeability, etc. These desirable properties make FRP have a wide application. Engineers can use them to effectively repair old constructions and build long durable constructions to save maintenance cost in civil engineering area.

Glass, carbon, and aramid fibers are the most commonly used fibers in FRP reinforcement. Thermosetting and thermoplastic are two types of resins, which classified by their properties. FRP can be used as external and internal reinforcement. The most popular forms of FRP external reinforcement are laminates and near surface mounted (NSM) rods, which can be used to strengthen the existing deteriorated structures. The FRP internal reinforcement is embedding FRP bars in concrete for new structures. In this article, the components, prosperities, and applications of FRP will be introduced.
