Introduction

In 1990s, a lot of young people almost insanely recited words in order to seize the limited the opportunity to become overseas student. In China, traditionally the most outstanding people only can go abroad. They often choose to study regular college course at the Chinese top university, and then go abroad to continue my studies. So they always give the foreigners with the impression of hard work and poverty. In an article, foreigners had such a description on Chinese students: “Traditional stereotypes about Asian students being geeky came about when the pupils tended to be" ABCs" ( American-born Chinese ). Those caricatures still exist, as displayed to humorous effect on websites such as , which consists of photos of Asian students sleeping in the library, usually slumped over their study materials.” (The Economist, 2012) This is one of impressions which the Chinese student left the foreigners. The Chinese students always very study hard, poor communication, reticent character etc…In addition to these, what are there stereotypes on the Chinese student? In general, the Chinese are very different, compared with the Western people, because Chinese are affected by Chinese culture rather than western culture. They in foreigner eye show the characteristic which is like to cook, poor communication with people, an traditional concepts and so on. Why do such stereotypes exist?

First, Chinese and Westerners are affected by different the history of education. The families of Chinese students generally are strict. Parents always require them to study hard and don't play, so sometimes their characters are silence. Moreover, Chinese students are almost synonymous with" hardworking” in the foreign eyes. The Chinese student can read all books which the teacher left. But they also get high score, because they never participated in class discussion. It also accounts for 50% of the scores. This has almost become a kind of way of thinking. The Chinese students don't like to discuss and don't like to speak. They maybe ever knew the answer or had a good idea, but they can never put up his hand to talk. When the teacher paid their attention to them, they were shy. Until the teacher ended the topic, they regretted. So the Chinese students always give poor impressions in the open foreign people eyes.

Second, Chinese are thriftier than the foreign people in the past. In early years, abroad students are national public students. Their scholarship was not much, even a little. So in order to save costs, they had to cook their own food to reduce the cost of living and bought some second-hand clothes to decorate themselves. But these situations are changing. With economic rising of China, more and more Chinese students walk out to a foreign country for study. Now China tops the list of overseas students in US (Michelle Fei, 2011). They are actively taking part in the western society, but also bringing a lot of change for the western countries. But some stereotypes still exist. What are the positive and negatives of stereotypes?
